La Segarra Square in Guissona
- Studio project film of square and associated housing
- Associated project 16 social housing units in Guissona
- Associated project EUROPAN 3: 32 social housing units
This ‘island’ within housing is seen as public space to the homes that surround it and the wider neighbourhood. The basic programme was for the provision of a sports court and a sandpit for children.
Guissona is a very dry geographical area. The interior of the square responds to this situation, reducing the lawn or small vegetation in favour of trees that provide good shade and that resist the climate. The surfaces are covered with “sauló”, and combined with ceramics to give colour to the surface.
This economic treatment to the surface of the earth accommodates various children’s games and an important population of trees.
Value was given the entrance sequence, and in defining intermediate chambers, which lead to the general lines that then organise the square. The lines are formed out of low concrete walls that orientate and close the various areas of the square. Planting of trees in small clusters help to shape these areas.
The lines refer to the walls of cultivation that are seen by ‘La Segarra’ organising the various fields and providing unity to the landscape. In the context of this ‘island,’ the walls become play equipment and benches.
