News Jan 2012, Workshop: Through the Canvas
The intention of this workshop is to revisit the history of domesticity, and more specifically the architectonical proposal stated by Dutch paintings of the Seventeenth Century. Students work with Dutch interiors painted by Pieter de Hooch and Emanual de Witte.
The exercise proposes to observe and draw the spatial proposal depicted in these paintings, and from these first observations draw a house that contain the spatial qualities that can be found in these paintings. This house should become an extension of the picture itself, imagining a continuity of the depicted scene. Students reach these houses through analysing the paintings and the kind of life these were trying to represent, the use of the spaces, their dimension, their hierarchies, the light… The picture is the starting place, students design from the information found there, discovering and expanding on the painters’ ideas through hand drawing and model making.
