Països Catalans Square
The remodeling of the current Plaça dels Països Catalans is a necessity derived from the dynamics of urban changes that have taken place in the vicinity of this square.
At the moment the perimeters of the square have a clearly transient state: The city is consolidated from Avinguda de Barcelona and is located in the Plaça dels Països Catalans with fragments of an industrial area currently with little activity.
The proposal for the square works as building and public space simultaneously, defining one in favor of the other. The new square is proposed to link entirely to the new building in order to facilitate easier access and ensure a more intense use. The proposed building is of high altitude if we compare it with the neighboring residential neighborhoods. The General Plan is interested in the fact that the new building which will appear on the north side of the square is a front with a strong presence on the road to Montcada, in order to create an urban reference point in this area.
In relation on the circulation, the new arrangement is based on guiding us according to the topography that an ancient torrent excavated throughout the area of the square. This judgement has evaluated the continuity, very intuitively, of the traffic on Avinguda Barcelona towards its natural continuation in descent towards the Miño street. The clear union of these two routes is supported by the POUM’s desire to make this connection a new Levant axis for the city of Terrassa.
