El Besós Market
The market.
The Market will be a large continuous space, which incorporates the facade of the old market inside. The original nave and the enlargement work in unity.
The cover.
The folds of the cover mark the position of the stands and the streets, the circulation inside the market is continuous, without distinguishing the transfer of the original nave and the extension.
The cover is a self-supporting folded sheet that flies from the old façade to the new perimeter of closure. The new facades have high windows protected from sunlight by wooden blinds, which let you glimpse the neighbouring houses.
The façade plan is protected by the overhang of the roof that organizes other commercial activities such as the sale of flowers and newspapers. These stands give relief to the deck at a smaller scale more appropriate to pedestrians.
The stands.
From the new access doors, the steps between shops take you to the Fish Square. This central point of sale is located just under the old cover. A large skylight will give a nuanced light on this area, which will make it distinguishable from the rest of the market, kept in shadows.
The number of stands is maintained and organized according to this order of appearance from the new main access: flowers – fruit – vegetables – …
Modifications to the Nave of 1926.
The nave of the year 26 has a height that allows the appearance of an attic.
Hanging at half height and the whole length a restaurant of market cuisine is positioned.
This large space will have windows in the two stages of the market, 26 and 04, visually overflowing the whole maze of ceilings of small stands.
It also contains a small hall to offer the possibility to organize meetings.
The access to the Restaurant is independent from the street so it does not depend on the hours of the market.
Market Square.
The perimeter of the Market encloses an outer space in the current street where the old market square had been transformed.
The activity in this small square is helped by the location of a bar with an outdoor terrace and the presence of the building on the corner with Carrer de Bogatell, where there will be offices, nursery schools and assisted housing.
The new square is tied to Avinguda Catalunya thanks to the large cantilever that marks a special corner in the urban route.
The perimeter of the Market Island.
The market activity is focused towards the pedestrian area of Avinguda Catalunya and Plaça, while beside Bogatell Street there is continuity on the built front of the street with two tower buildings.
These volumes will allow other programmes to share the same island and benefit from the presence of the Market.
Low perimeter.
Plaça del Mercat and Avinguda Catalunya are the two commercial sides of the island characterized by what happens under the great cover of the market.
The roof overflows the closed space on the market to organize an intermediate, continuous, parallel, façade, commerce and shadow space on the outside.
From the roof, some large flat panels with wooden blinds come down, reaching the deck down the street, and lowering the scale.
At the same time, these sun umbrellas sift the light that reaches the inside of the Market through the large windows of the façade.
From the market façade there are small volumes of flower and newspaper stands. In these stores, the good daily appearance of the market is entrusted.
The flower stands will welcome people with different colours every day.
