La Favorita Refurbishment
- La Favorita featured in AV PROYECTOS, N.108, Spain, 2021
- Exhibited at La Biennale di Venezia 2023 as part of ‘Emotional Heritage’
The project involves the rehabilitation of the old industrial complex “La Favorita,” located at the intersection of Roc Boronat / Llull streets in Barcelona, for its reuse as a centre for new forms of production.
The group of buildings that are integrated in the project have different origins and classifications, but the project works with all of them simultaneously, reinforcing the situation of this industrial complex, granted by the long facade of 83 meters long and 7 meters high that surrounds the existing warehouses, built in successive stages and which almost completely cover the entire plot of land.
The complex will operate with a single entrance through a gate at the corner, which opens onto a small garden where a path leads towards the various workshops, studios, and stairs, sometimes circulating in the open air, in direct contact with the other warehouses and sheds that form the interior of this industrial block, linking the different stages of design, manufacturing, and exhibition that will take place inside. The project values the large dimensions and scale of the original buildings, and therefore the workspaces do not divide or fragment them but emphasize their industrial character, with very unique dimensions, details, and lighting.
Towards the city, the 7-meter-high facade has allowed the plane trees on the sidewalk to grow their branches over the roofs of the warehouses. The proposal takes this condition as a quality of the street to be preserved. Therefore, the expansion of the building will preserve the current section, stepping back to grow from the ridge, continuing the folded geometry of the original building. This proposal respects both the physical heritage and the environmental heritage –the character of the street, its plane trees, the amount of natural light, and the amount of sky are as important to the neighbourhood as the constructions themselves.
