News Feb 2015, study trip to Copenhagen

This trip intends to introduce students to projects that have the same program as the one they are focusing on in their exercise: housing that produces community. The study trip lasted four complete days. The first three days were focused on visits to some examples of social housing in Copenhagen and surroundings during the mornings, combined with short exercises in the afternoons regarding the examples they had visited. Students worked in groups of four or five, in order to be able to do discuss proposals and draw and model them in the length of one afternoon. These exercises took place at the School of Architecture of the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, and included drawing and model making. Thanks to our friend the professor Niels Goenbaek, the group could use some of the classrooms of the School of Architecture, and dine at the Canteen together with the rest of the students of the school. The exercises ended with a presentation to all the groups. The fourth day was dedicated to sightseeing Copenhagen. While in this town, the students stayed in shared flats and rented bikes, as a fast way to move and being into the everyday rhythm of the city.

Program of the study trip. On the first day, we visited a housing building in Kastrup, a renovation and extension of an existing building done by our friend the Danish architect Steen Palsboll, who designed the project and followed its construction. After it, we visited the School by the Sound, by Kaj Gottlob, and the Blue Corner building by Tegnestuen Vandkunsten, located in one of the oldest parts of the city, called Christanshavn. Nearby, the Danish architect Peder Duelund Mortensen, member of BOX 25 architects, explained us the Sophiegarden housing project. In the afternoon, we headed to the school of architecture to start exercising on the visited buildings.

On the second day, we visited the Hornbaekhus housing project by Kay Fisker, with an explanation by the architect Steen Palsboll. Later we went to the Nyborder neighborhood, an area of small row houses originally built for the families of the Royal Danish Navy.

The last day, we went to see some modern examples of housing building in the Almager and Orestadt areas. We visited the VM Houses, The Mountain House, and the 8 House by BIG, and the Tietgenkollegiet project by Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma.
