Existing site
The old Carlsberg complex – a former historic brewery site – is characterised by its great industrial scale, too big to allow the conditions for urban and domestic life to happen. The existing old industrial buildings lack a domestic scale and the distances between them are too large and without tension.
The site is surrounded by low-density housing buildings without a clear cultural or civic centre.
The scale of the site allows us to think of it as a new centre of activities for the area.

Extending existing buildings
The proposal works in continuity with the existing by making careful and precise modifications to the elements found in the site.  The buildings are extended in order to redefine new distances and relationships between them and to modify the surrounding public spaces. Thus, the industrial scale dominating the site is transformed and a new intermediate scale appears in between the pedestrian sidewalks and the big industrial buildings.

Elephant Square
The East-West axis of the Ny Carlsberg Vej slows down its speed, its axial strength, and breaks down in a new centre: The Elephant Square.
The sense of the promenade changes direction: one’s gaze moves, and we are linked to two adjacent collective spaces: The Campus Park towards the South and the Garden of the circular bushes in the North.
This new collective space is reinforced by the agglomeration of new high-rise buildings that combine with the low existing buildings.

Diagonal of Gardens
The big Søndermarken Park is extended, linking the two existing gardens in the site and finally crossing over the speedway and train to connect with the other side, where the cemetery and the cultivated lands lie.
A green diagonal provides a garden structure that connects the currently forgot South Bank with the north part of the city.

A city over time
We think of the proposal not as a new and clean addition but as something dissolved into what is already there, taking inertia from the buildings that are found on the site and modifying them, redrawing them to adapt them to new necessities.
We see architecture as something accumulative, evolving over time. We are interested in cities and buildings made from the addition of phases by different authors over the years. These pieces have a greater depth and intensity in the way they present themselves to the city: they are less perfect in their solutions yet more complex and attentive to their context.
