Refurbishment of the Fuerzas Eléctricas Building
Motto: Diagonal Scale.
Formal and constructive memory.
The proposal seeks to recover the original construction, valuing three of the main features of the building:
- Large windows.
- The regular facade on its perimeter.
- The longitudinal space of the naves.
The big windows.
They are the protagonists of the facade, and they will allow us a new occupation of the building for young people, providing their work spaces with air and natural light.
For this reason, the plant is organized with work spaces on the perimeter and leaves the central space for traffic and casual encounters.
In order to bring the working tables to the window, especially in the long southwest facade, the section of these openings will be designed in order to improve their climatic response: double glazing, wood carpentry industrialized with guillotine, adjustable and projectable blinds.
The regular facade.
We are interested in recovering all the windows of the perimeter; therefore, the proposal needs to work more intensively with the façade that is currently hidden by small auxiliary constructions.
The proposal recovers this facade for the interior of the building, making a vertical core of stairs and elevator that walks from side to side of the facade.
It is interesting to keep this communication core open to help understand the center as a unit. The distribution of the first floor is organized around the vertical circulation and when arriving at the second and last, there is enough space to organize a privileged, more internal meeting point in the center, which we call the Club.
In order to make possible this open central staircase, the scale of a meeting point , the center would also have an exterior emergency staircase, also supported on this east facade.
The longitudinal space of the ships.
The flexible interior that has left the industrial past of the building will continue directing the internal order of the plants.
To promote this total reading of the old building, the bathrooms and the vertical access nucleus are placed in the narrow strip that separates it from the neighboring housing stock.
This strip is occupied until the height of the middle wall allows us, without exceeding its height so as not to hurt the sunlight entrance that currently has this island courtyard.
The length of the space will be defined by the distribution of common spaces of circulation that are designed on the floors, and the dividing partitions that will have their upper and folding strip of glass to facilitate the cross ventilation of the different cubicles.
